Kazakhstan to extensively fix its power plants

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 11. Kazakhstan plans to carry out large-scale repairs at power plants, said Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev at a government meeting, Trend reports.

"In line with the schedule authorized by the system operator, power plants are scheduled to repair 10 power units, 55 boilers, and 45 turbines this year in anticipation of the approaching heating season," he said.

According to him, at various stages, repair work is being carried out on 2 power units, 12 boilers and 2 turbines. Repairs have already been completed on 1 power unit, 1 boiler and 4 turbines.

"Electrical networks plan to rebuild 20,900 km of transmission lines and 423 high-voltage substations. Electrical network repairs follow schedules. The government reserve has allotted 17 billion tenge ($38.6 million) for energy source preparation, according to applicants. Rest of applications will be finished soon," the minister noted.

Meanwhile, electricity production in Kazakhstan amounted to 112.8 billion kWh in 2023. During this period, electricity imports totaled 3.4 billion kWh, while exports totaled 1.4 billion kWh, and the volume of electricity consumption was 115 billion kWh (in 2022, 112.9 billion kWh).

Today, the country has 220 power plants, including 144 renewable energy ones, with 2.8 GW of capacity. On January 1, 2024, the total capacity was 20.4 GW, while the autumn-winter maximum usage was 16.6 GW.
