Kyrgyzstan nearing end of construction on CASA-1000 energy project

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, August 2. Construction work on the CASA-1000 project in Kyrgyzstan is expected to be completed by August 2024, Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev announced at a press conference, Trend reports.

Ibraev highlighted that the construction of the 500 kV overhead transmission line, spanning 456 kilometers, is currently underway. The construction of the 500 kV Datka substation is 100 percent complete. The installation of supports is also finished, and 428 kilometers of the transmission line have been laid out of the total 456 kilometers.

The CASA-1000 project seeks to unite the power grids of Central and South Asia, connecting Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan with Afghanistan and Pakistan, and setting up systems for energy trading according to global standards.

The project includes upgrading the power grid infrastructure, building new substations, and constructing a high-voltage transmission line, enabling Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to export excess electricity to Pakistan and Afghanistan during the summer months. The total project cost is estimated at $1.1 billion, with 456 kilometers of transmission lines to be installed in Kyrgyzstan out of a total length of 1,400 kilometers.
