BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 2. A total of nine new wells will be drilled in Phase 19 of the South Pars (North Dome in Qatar) gas field, which is a joint gas field of Iran and Qatar, the head of Iran's Northern Mining Company Ruhollah Abdi told local media, Trend reports.
According to him, the Sahar-1 drilling rig has been dispatched to the mentioned stage after a major overhaul.
Abdi noted that the objective of drilling new wells in the mentioned stage is to create a balance between gas production and consumption in the country.
The official stated that the Sahar 1 drilling rig underwent an overhaul after 13 years of its exploitation. A total of $12.5 million and 120 days were spent on its repair. The repair work was carried out by local specialists. During the mentioned period, 30 oil and gas wells were drilled and handed over by the Sahar 1 drilling rig.
Iran has 28 phases in the South Pars gas field.
Iran started production from this field in 2002. It is reported that Iran is currently producing a total of 700 million cubic meters of gas daily from these phases. It is estimated that Iran has spent as much as $90 billion on this field. It is noted that about 33 percent of the gas that can be produced from the gas field belongs to Iran. On the Iranian side, the field has been developed by Iranians, while on the Qatari side, it has been developed mostly by foreign companies.
The South Pars (North Dome in Qatar) gas field is a joint gas field between Iran and Qatar. It is reported that this field has 51 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves, of which 36 trillion cubic meters can be produced. Iran's share in this field is 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of gas condensate.
To note, Iran is considered the second largest gas reserve country in the world, with reserves of about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Presently, 22 gas fields are operating in Iran.
