BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 24. In Iran’s northeastern Razavi Khorasan Province, efforts are underway to double the gas storage capacity of the Shourijeh gas field’s underground facility, Behnam Mirzaei, Executive Director of Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company, told reporters, Trend reports.
Speaking to local media, Mirzaei noted that work is being carried out to increase the capacity of the Shourijeh D underground gas storage to 4.5 billion cubic meters annually, up from the current 2.03 billion cubic meters.
Mirzayi added that physical work on developing the Shurije D facility is more than halfway complete, with 55 percent of the project finished.
“The development plan includes drilling 28 reservoirs and installing three compressors at the Shourijeh gas field. This underground storage will play a crucial role in addressing gas shortages in the country’s northern and northeastern regions during the winter,” he said.
The operational operations of Phase 2 of the Shourijeh D underground gas storage facility started on March 31, 2022. These operations are carried out following the agreement signed last year between the Iranian gas production and engineering company and Mapna Group. According to the contract, the operational works will be completed within 3 years, and phase 2 will be utilized for 20 years. The value of the contract is $2.2 billion. Under the contract, 28 wells will be drilled, a gas gathering center will be built, and compressors and other equipment will be installed. With the commissioning of Phase 2, the capacity of this underground storage facility will increase to 20 million cubic meters of gas daily for 8 months and 40 million cubic meters of gas for 4 months.
