Arsenal are to appeal a two-match ban handed to their manager Arsene Wenger for breaching the terms of a previous Champions League sanction, DPA reported.

Europe's governing body UEFA issued the punishment together with a fine of 10,000 euros for "improper conduct by their officials".

Wenger was found guilty of contacting the team bench during the first leg of their qualifying match with Udinese on August 16, a match in which he had been serving a touchline ban.

Should the ban stand, Wenger will have to sit in the stands for Wednesday's second leg away to the Italian side.

Wenger had claimed he had sought clarification from UEFA before the first leg and that he had stuck to their rules.

"That's why I'm quite surprised they need an inquiry because they gave us the rules and we observed strictly what they told us," Wenger said last Friday.
