Turkey is counting on Germany’s support for joining the EU, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Berlin during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Turkish media reported Sept. 28.
Erdogan said that Turkey will continue to implement reforms in order to join the EU.
He noted that the resumption of negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU benefits both the EU and Ankara.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Turkey intends to develop relations with the EU.
An association agreement between the EU and Turkey was signed in 1963. Ankara filed an application for membership in the EU in 1987, but accession negotiations were launched in 2005.
