Azerbaijan, Baku, August 23 /Trend/

Iran 's Foreign Ministry congratulated Libyans in their victory and urged the Libyan nation to prevent any foreign interference, IRIB reported, quoting the Foreign Ministry's statement.

"That the uprising of the Libyan people indicated a respect for people's rights is an undeniable fact. The Islamic republic of Iran has supported Libya's movement from the beginning and opposed any foreign interference in killing innocent people who have a right to change their destiny", the statement said.

Iran believes that the Libyan people will succeed in discarding colonial power out of their country and will prevent any foreign interference in their goals, it added.

The Islamic republic is always ready to offer its expertise to the Libyan nation. The statement went on urging Libyans to be vigilant enough to safeguard their uprising and guide it into a channel which would lead to independence, national sovereignty, dignity, construction, and prosperity of the country.

World leaders urged 69-year-old Gaddafi to surrender in order to prevent more bloodshed, and appealed for an orderly transition of power as the six-month-old battle for control of the oil-producing North African nation appeared to enter its final stages.

Rebels swept into Tripoli two days ago in tandem with a city uprising. Hundreds seem to have been killed or wounded since Saturday.

The uprising started in February, spreading through the Middle East and North Africa, with records of violent incidents in Libya, Yemen, and Bahrain. The protests in the Arab world are inspired by the recent revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt.
