Georgian Trade Unions Confederation (GTUC) held in Tbilisi on May 1a rally of solidarity with regard to the International Day of Solidarity of Workers. Nearly 1,000 union members gathered at the Square of Roses, and thence marched towards the Parliament of Georgia.
The participants staged a demonstration before the walls of the parliament. They presented all the amendments to the law, which had been ignored by lawmakers, although aimed at improving the situation of employed people and protecting their rights.
Speakers urged the authorities to adopt these amendments, because it is a requirement of working people.
GTUC leader Irakli Petriashvili said GTUC will not stop until it gets its way.
"In Georgia, labour is not valued properly, and there is no corresponding respect for working people. People are not immune from the wanton dismissal, in most cases, workers get very low salaries, safe work norms are not respected," he said.
Petriashvili noted that even according to official statistics, one in six people in Georgia is unemployed.
Protesters made a special appeal to the Government and the Parliament of Georgia, which highlights difficult social situation in the country.
A number of opposition parties of the left wing took part in the GTUC rally.
