TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, November 13. Uzbekistan's joint project portfolio with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) exceeded $100 million, Trend reports.
The topic was raised during a meeting between the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the CEO and Chairman of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Carlos Rodriguez, as part of the COP29 events in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The discussion focused on current issues related to expanding practical cooperation with the GEF in the areas of climate resilience and ecosystem protection in Uzbekistan.
The important contribution of the GEF to the implementation of biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, and climate change adaptation projects in Uzbekistan was acknowledged with satisfaction.
Special attention was given to the creation of a regional air quality monitoring network, the implementation of greening programs and eco-tourism development, the conservation of endangered species, and the rehabilitation of the Aral Sea region.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on hosting major international events in Uzbekistan next year, including the GEF Donors’ Meeting.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.
The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.

On November 11, the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on
Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) kicked off in the
capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. The event will run until November 22.
A total of 67,000 people have registered to participate in
COP29.
