BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 5. The volume of wheat purchased from farmers in Iran from April 5 through May 3 has decreased by around 8 percent compared to the same period last year, Sohrab Sohrabi, an official from the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture, told reporters, Trend reports.
According to Sohrabi, the total wheat purchased during this period amounted to approximately 980,000 tons, down from 1.06 million tons during the same timeframe in 2024.
Sohrabi further mentioned that, for the current agricultural year (from March 21, 2025, through March 20, 2026), the guaranteed price for bread wheat has been set at 205,000 rials (about $0.38) per kilogram, while durum wheat is priced at 210,000 rials (about $0.39) per kilogram.
To date, around 286,000 hectares of land have been harvested for wheat, with 274,000 hectares being regular farming areas and 11,700 hectares being rainfed regions.
"The decrease in wheat production is due to a shortage of rainfall during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Rainfall during these periods was 30 percent lower than the previous year. Additionally, the country's water reservoirs are down by 17 percent compared to last year, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Energy," Sohrabi explained.
Iran planted wheat across 6.39 million hectares this year, of which 4.22 million hectares are rainfed, and 2.17 million hectares are regular irrigated land.
