ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, May 13. Uzbekistan is moving forward with an initiative to eliminate the double customs duty rate applied to certain imported goods, Trend reports.
A corresponding draft law introducing amendments to the Customs Code was approved in the second reading by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (Uzbekistan’s Parliament).
The legislation seeks to abolish the current practice of applying elevated customs duties on imports from countries that do not have most-favored-nation (MFN) trade agreements with Uzbekistan or when the country of origin is not specified.
Lawmakers noted that the proposed changes aim to close existing legal gaps, foster a more attractive investment climate, and encourage foreign investment. Additionally, the bill is expected to align Uzbekistan’s customs regulations with World Trade Organization (WTO) standards and strengthen the country's international trade relations.
Once adopted, the reform is expected to enhance transparency, predictability, and competitiveness within Uzbekistan’s foreign trade system.
