There are 6.2 million debit and 559,000 credit cards in Georgia, which means an average of 1.75 bank cards per capita, Trend reports citing the National Bank of Georgia.
In Georgia, the bank card processing market is dominated by two companies - Visa and Mastercard.
According to the National Bank of Georgia, as of July 2021, there are 2.05 million VISA debit cards in Georgia, and the number of Mastercard / Maestro cards is 3.79 million. The number of debit cards of other systems is 349,000.
The shares of debit cards by payment systems are as follows:
Mastercard / Maestro - 61 percent of the market;
VISA - 33 percent of the market;
Other systems - 5.6 percent of the market.
The leader is VISA, with 41 percent of the market.
The credit card market is divided into payment systems as follows:
VISA - 32 percent of the market;
Mastercard / Maestro - 21 percent of the market;
Other systems - 47 percent of the market.
More than 1.4 million transactions are carried out with these cards daily, the total volume of which averages over 120 million lari ($38.4 million) per day. For comparison, 5 years ago less than 360,000 card payments were made per day, and the volume of these payments was 39 million lari ($12.4 million) per day. Consequently, the number of bank card transactions has increased several times over the past 5 years.
As for Internet banking, as of July 2021, an average of 250,000 transactions are made daily.
