BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 30. Iran’s sprat fishing in the Caspian Sea rose by 7 percent in the first seven months of this Iranian year (March 21 through October 22, 2023), compared to the same period last year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Reza Abbaspour Naderi said, Trend reports.
Naderi also said that in total, Iran caught 8,518 tons of sprats from the Caspian Sea in that period.
“Out of this amount, 5,353 tons came from the Mazandaran Province basin of the Caspian Sea, which is a 9-percent increase from last year,” he added.
The deputy chairman noted that the rest of the sprats, 3,165 tons, were caught in the Gilan Province basin of the Caspian Sea and showed a 5-percent rise from last year.
90 percent of the sprats caught in the Caspian Sea by Iran are used to make fish powder. Sprat is more nutritious than many bony fish, and that is why it is turned into fish powder. To preserve the sprat population in the Caspian Sea, it is not fished there in the spring.
