BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. Cargo transit through Iran’s northeastern Golestan Province rose by 25 percent in value and 26 percent in volume, during the first ten months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through January 20, 2024), compared to the same period last year, Director General of Golestan Province Customs Office Shahriar Shahriari said, Trend reports.
The director general also said that 45,200 tons of goods worth around $236 million were transited via the province in 10 months.
However, Shahriari did not specify the nature or destination of the transited goods.
According to him, the revenue of the provincial customs for the reporting period stood at 4 trillion rials (about $95.2 million), showing an increase of 160 percent compared to the same period last year.
Golestan Province, Iran, is located on the border with Turkmenistan.
In total, about 11.1 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran’s roads and railroads in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through December 21, 2023), which is an increase of 37 percent compared to the same period last year.
Currently, Iran has 2,793 km of controlled-access highways, 45,170 km of highways and freeways, and 14,984 km of railway lines. There are 978 locomotives, 29,305 freight wagons, and 2,153 passenger wagons operating on Iran’s railways.
