BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 30. Iran is going to launch several new facilities at its ports in a span of 10 days, starting from February 1 to February 11, 2024, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Head of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Ali Akbar Safaei said, Trend reports.
These dates coincide with the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, which is celebrated as a national holiday.
Safaei announced that these facilities include warehouses, cargo terminals and more. They cost about 65.7 trillion rials (around $1.56 billion) to build and equip.
The deputy minister also said that Iran has been working on 105 maritime projects since the current government came to power in August 2021. These projects involve building port facilities, ships, and other related equipment and supplies. They have a total cost of 120 trillion rials (about $2.86 billion).
He added that 18 of these projects have already been completed and they cost 4.06 trillion rials (around $96.7 million).
Safaei mentioned that some of the equipment and supplies that have been produced or are being produced include marine loading arm, buoy, fire engine, and more. They have a total cost of 132 million euros and 115 million euros respectively.
Reportedly, the annual capacity of Iranian ports is currently more than 285 million tons. Iran is taking a number of steps to increase the capacity of its ports to 500 million tons per year.
