BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, April 17. The construction of the Orto-Tokoy hydropower plant, located at the Orto-Tokoy reservoir in Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul region, is scheduled to be commissioned in the first half of 2026, Trend reports via the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan.
The project, developed by the Chakan HPP Kyrgyz company in partnership with China National Machinery Industry Corporation, involves an investment of approximately $34.8 million. So far, construction teams have completed key components, including the spillway tunnel, roadworks, and worker facilities.
A total of 130 workers are currently involved in the project. Once operational, the 21 MW plant is expected to produce 75 million kWh of electricity annually, which will be enough to supply over 14,000 households.
To note, on March 24, 2023, China National Machinery Industry Corporation and Chakan HPP OJSC signed a contract for the construction of the power plant.
In total, 12 hydropower plants are planned to be commissioned in Kyrgyzstan in 2026. By 2030, the country aims to build over 50 new hydropower plants as part of its strategy to expand clean energy production and strengthen energy security.
