BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 9. Construction has begun on a 20-megawatt solar power plant (SPP) in Urmia, the capital city of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province, located in the northwest of the country, Maham Momeni, CEO at Iran's Hirbod Niroo Company, told reporters, Trend reports.
According to Momeni, the plant will be located on a 30-hectare plot of land and is expected to produce 41 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. The plant will utilize bifacial panels and a 350-kilowatt inverter.
Momeni added that the SPP is expected to be completed in the coming months and connected to the country’s electrical grid within the next year (from March 21, 2025, through March 20, 2026).
"Once operational, the plant will prevent the emission of 25,000 tons of greenhouse gases, especially CO2, per year. It will also prevent the release of pollutants from the consumption of 10 million liters of fuel by 4,400 fuel-carrying vehicles and save 16 million cubic meters of gas annually," he said.
Currently, the total production capacity of renewable energy-based power plants in Iran stands at 1,550 megawatts. Iran’s Minister of Energy, Abbas Aliabadi, has stated that this capacity will increase to 2,000 megawatts by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2025).
