BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 9. The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the ports of Abadan in the southwestern Khuzestan Province has increased by more than 72 percent in the 10 months of the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through February 19, 2025) compared to the same period last year (from March 21, 2023, through January 20, 2024), Kambiz Malekizadeh, the director of the ports and maritime department of Abadan, told reporters, Trend reports.
Malekizadeh explained that over the past ten months, a total of 147,000 tons of cargo were handled at the ports of Abadan.
Malekizadeh further noted that during this period, the primary goods loaded and unloaded included fish, rubber, petroleum products, construction materials, animal feed, and foodstuffs.
The port official also highlighted that Abadan ports have been primarily involved in trade exchanges with countries surrounding the Persian Gulf, including the UAE and Kuwait.
"Over the past ten months, 35,400 tons of oil and oil products were exported through Abadan ports, which is 12 times higher than the same period last year," he added.
There are 3 ports operating in Abadan County of Iran - Arvandkenar, Chavibdeh and Abadan ports.
To note, the current throughput capacity of Iranian ports is more than 285 million tons. Iran is taking steps to increase the capacity of ports to 500 million tons.
