BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 15. Iran saw a 7 percent increase in the volume of wheat purchased between April 5 and May 13 from farmers under a guaranteed scheme compared to the same period last year, said Majid Anjafi, the country’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Trend reports.
In an interview with local media, Anjafi stated that during the mentioned period, 1.7 million tons of wheat were bought from farmers through this guarantee.
Despite challenges such as energy shortages and drought conditions, Anjafi expressed confidence that the country is on track to collect a total of 11 million tons of wheat in the current year, with guaranteed purchases from farmers expected to reach 9 million tons.
Anjafi also highlighted the agricultural potential of Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, where around 5 million tons of agricultural products are grown annually, with 60 percent of that being crops.
Iran has planted wheat across 6.39 million hectares, with 4.22 million hectares designated as arable land and 2.17 million hectares classified as conventionally cultivated land.
For the current year (from March 21, 2025, through March 20, 2026), the price for one kilogram of wheat for bread production is set at 205,000 rials (about $0.38), while durum wheat is priced at 210,000 rials (about $0.39).
