BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 15. Cargo transportation by Iranian railways is planned to reach 54 million tons in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2025–March 20, 2026), Deputy Minister for Roads and Urban Development of Iran and President of the Railways of Iran (RAI) Jabbar Ali Zakeri told reporters, Trend reports.
He said that necessary instructions have been given to various agencies in this regard and more than 570 freight locomotives have been made ready.
Zakeri noted that eight million tons of cargo are planned to be transported (import, export, transit) by Iranian railways in the current year. In this direction, the Khorasan and Hormuzgan railways of Iran are of great importance.
To note, in the previous Iranian year (from March 20, 2023, through March 19, 2024), five million tons of cargo were transported by Iranian railways for export, import, and transit purposes.
The total linear extent of railway infrastructure within the territorial confines of Iran measures 14,984 kilometers. A total of 29,950 freight wagons and 2,178 passenger wagons are operational within the Iranian railway network.
