Barcelona, who went into their return leg in the Camp Nou with a 1-0 advantage, beat Bundesliga side Schalke 04 1-0, while Manchester United suffered a scare against Roma, who missed a penalty, but advanced 3-0 on aggregate after winning 1- 0 in Manchester.
Barcelona will face Manchester in the semi-finals.
In Spain, Barcelona were never in any real danger of surrendering their lead from the first game, as they completely dominated their opponents.
They had to wait for 43 minutes though before they finally took the lead after the Schalke defence failed to clear a cross from 17- year-old sensation Bojan. Mladen Kristajic tried to head clear, but only managed to find the feet of Yaya Toure, who scored from close range.
At Old Trafford, Roma had an excellent opportunity to tilt the game their way after being awarded a somewhat dubious penalty on the half hour after Wes Brown was rather harshly adjudged to have brought down Mancini, but Daniele de Rossi blasted the ball over the bar.
Any hopes of Roma coming back into the tie were effectively buried 20 minutes from the end when England international Owen Hargreaves played a crisp ball into the centre for Carlos Tevez, whose diving header gave goalkeeper Doni no chance.
On Tuesday, Chelsea overcame a 2-1 first leg deficit against Turkish club Fenerbahce with a 2-0 win to set up a semi-final clash with fellow Premiership club Liverpool, who beat Premiership rivals Arsenal 4- 2 in a thrilling encounter to advance 5-3 on aggregate.
