At least 25 people were killed and 15 others were injured when a truck in which they were travelling skidded off a highway in Bangladesh on Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred in thick fog. The truck, carrying mostly labourers, crashed into a ditch at Ashiqpur near Tangail district town some 100 km (62 miles) northwest of the capital Dhaka, Reuters reported.

Police and rescuers rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies from the mangled truck and removed injured to a nearby hospital.

"Among the injured five were in critical condition," police Sub-Inspector Kazi Shamsul Haq told Reuters.

Bad weather conditions are often a factor in road accidents in Bangladesh.
