Turkmen president: Neutralizing of int'l conflicts requires dialogue with OSCE

Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Dec. 20 / Trend H. Hasanov /

It is necessary to conduct a permanent dialogue with partners of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to establish effective mechanisms to prevent and neutralize international conflicts, according to Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov, quoted by the local media.

"Turkmenistan's participation in the OSCE activity is an important aspect of foreign policy strategy of the country," he said.

Confronting political and religious extremism, terrorist threats, drug trafficking and transnational crime, and developing a modern model of international cooperation in the sphere of energy supplies constitute the main spheres of cooperation, he said.

Berdymuhammedov recently voiced the OSCE's joining the Turkmen initiative to establish the Forum on Security and Cooperation in Central Asia and Caspian Basin at the highest level. It deals with establishing the organization under the UN auspices in the form of regular political consultations at the highest level among Central Asian and Caspian countries.

Ashgabat calls for expanding international cooperation in resolving the problems about the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, disarmament and arms control. Special attention goes to the fact that important energy, transportation and communication nodes are forming in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin.

According to Ashgabat's initiative, each country in the region should host the forum on a regular basis, especially since the headquarters of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia is in Ashgabat.
