Kazakhstan prepares for heating season with major energy repairs and fuel reserves

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 8. Kazakhstan has secured 5.2 million tons of coal and 88,000 tons of fuel oil for the upcoming heating season, Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliev announced during a government meeting, Trend reports.

The heating season has already begun in the regions of Abai, Akmola, Atyrau, East Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, and in the capital city, Astana. Due to weather conditions, the heating season in the western and southern regions is scheduled to start in mid-October.

According to the minister, repairs at power plants have been completed on five energy blocks, 32 boilers, and 28 turbines, with ongoing work on an additional four energy blocks, 23 boilers, and 16 turbines.

Repairs have also been completed on 19,900 km of transmission lines, 376 substations, and 4,046 distribution points and transformer substations.

To strengthen the reliability of the energy supply for the coming heating season, the ministry has adjusted maximum electricity tariffs and raised the annual cap for returnable investments.

These measures have increased funding for repair work by 44 percent in 2024, reaching $675.38 million compared to the previous year.
