BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 21. The crude steel consumption in Iran decreased by 3.1 percent during the five months of the current Iranian year (from March 21 through August 22, 2025) compared to the same period last year (from March 20 through August 21, 2024).
The data obtained by Trend from the country's Steel Producers Association shows that this figure amounted to 9.33 million tons against 9.63 million tons a year before.
During the reporting period, Iran consumed 7.87 million tons of steel products, which is 5.5 percent less than the same period last year (8.33 million tons).
In the past five months, sponge iron consumption reached about 17.2 million tons, marking a 1.4 percent increase compared to 17 million tons in the same period last year.
During this period, iron ore pellet consumption was 21.5 million tons, down 3.6 percent from 22.3 million tons in the last year’s corresponding period.
Meanwhile, iron ore concentrate consumption totaled 27.3 million tons, up 0.4 percent from 27.2 million tons during the five months last year.
To note, Iran’s steel consumption capacity is around 40 million tons per year.
