(autoinsidernews) - BMW today revealed its Hydrogen 7, which will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The alternative-fuel version of the 7-Series

from the companys CleanEnergy project was recently spotted during road tests. Since a true hydrogen infrastructure is decades off, the Hydrogen 7 is powered by a dual-mode modified version of the corporate 6.0L V12, which can swich from gasoline to liquid hydrogen fuel, reports Trend.

On either fuel, the engine produces 260 horsepower and spews virtually no harmful emissions or CO2 into the air. The Hydrogen 7 goes from zero to 60 in 9.5 seconds, while far slower than a standard 7-Series, it is rapid compared to some EVs and hybrids. In hydrogen mode, the operating range is only about 124 miles, which is the reason for the gasoline mode. Using both fuels increases the cars range to a combined 400 miles.

With Ford beating BMW to market as the first automaker to sell a hydrogen powered vehicle the Hydrogen E-Series busses, this will be this first hydrogen-powered passenger car.
