OMV Austria wants to contribute to Turkmenistan's diversification of gas export routes, Wolfgang Sporrer, OMV representative said.

"At the moment, the demand for natural gas on the world market is increasing. Many power plants with gas turbines are being constructed now. Natural gas is required for these plants," he said.

He said that the large fuel and energy resources of Turkmenistan strengthen its positions as a promising and reliable partner.

Sporrer said that all conditions have been created for the development of investment relations and the successful implementation of large-scale joint projects in Turkmenistan.

"Our company is interested to contribute to Turkmenistan's continuous diversification of gas export routes. The creation of favorable conditions for foreign companies should be emphasized," he said.

In late December 2009, Austrian European and International Affairs Minister Michael Shpindelegger called Turkmenistan important for Austria and the whole EU in terms of energy security.

Intensification of cooperation and integration of Turkmenistan in the Nabucco gas pipeline project are important.

Nabucco gas pipeline project, worth 7.9 billion euros, envisages gas supply from the Caspian region to EU countries. Participants in the project are Austrian OMV, Hungarian MOL, Bulgarian Bulgargaz, Romanian Transgaz, Turkish Botas and German RWE companies.

The pipeline's maximum capacity will be 31 billion cubic meters per year.

According to BP, Turkmenistan's proven gas reserves as of early 2009 are 7, 94 trillion cubic meters or 4, 3 percent of world reserves. According to BP, gas production in the country in 2008, amounted to 66, 1 billion cubic meters.
