The Executive Board of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change has registered another project for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in Uzbekistan, the National Authority for CDM said on Friday.

The project provides for the reduction of gas leaks in the gas distribution networks of low and medium pressure in the Khorezm province and Karakalpakstan (northwest Uzbekistan).

The planned reduction in emissions according to the project will amount to over 768,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. The project will be carried out by Uztransgaz joint-stock company (a division of the Uzbekneftegaz National Holding Company (NHC) , the operator of gas transportation in Uzbekistan).

Currently, the executive board of UN FCCC registered 14 CDM projects from Uzbekistan with a total planned reduction in emissions in the 7.041 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

National Authority for CDM in Uzbekistan is the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic which is authorized to carry out the distribution of emissions of greenhouse gas emission reductions among investors of CDM projects.

According to the Ministry, Uzbekistan ranks seventh in the global rankings on the estimated amount of annual emission reductions, and 19th in the world in the number of registered CDM projects.

Uztransgaz is a subsidiary of Uzbekneftegaz and controls the activities of transportation and supply of gas in Uzbekistan.

Currently, the Uztransgaz system exploits 13,274 kilometers of trunk pipelines, 24 gas compressor and 310 gas distribution stations, as well as three underground gas storage facilities with total capacity of 4.5 billion cubic meters.

According to official statistics, Uzbekistan has increased the transfer of fuel by the main pipelines in 2011, compared with 2010, by 11.5 percent - to 59.9 million tons. Turnover of main pipelines for the last year grew by 11.1 percent - to 32.1 billion ton-kilometers.

The total length of gas pipelines in Uzbekistan at present in terms of one line is more than 13,000 kilometers.
