Ashgabat eyeing electricity supply to neighbors

Turkmenistan’s role in electricity supply to Central Asia and Middle East will be discussed during the international energy conference to be held in Ashgabat Sept. 8-10.

Turkmenistan’s Energy Ministry and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry are the organizers of the event.

Representatives from many countries, including Azerbaijan, the US, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran, China, France, Turkey, Germany, the UK and Japan will take part in the International Exhibition and Scientific Conference, themed “The Main Trends of the Development of Energy Industry of Turkmenistan.”

Attracting foreign investments, construction and modernization of generating and distributing facilities, and energy saving in Turkmenistan’s electricity sector will be discussed during the event.

“The conference is a platform for big Turkmen and foreign companies, and makes it possible to determine the forms of their further cooperation in development of the national energy sphere and creating a mutually beneficial international partnership,” said the organizers.

Currently, the work is underway in Turkmenistan to expand electricity export to Afghanistan and Iran.

Moreover, the country is studying the possibilities of electricity supply to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and the Caucasian countries.

Turkmenistan plans to increase the electricity output to 27.4 billion kilowatt hours by 2020 and to 35.5 billion kilowatt hours by 2030.

The country generated 22.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2015 and exported 3.2 billion kilowatt hours of this volume.
