BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 10. The development of a four-way intergovernmental agreement between Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, and Romania for the creation of the international transport route from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea is nearing completion, with the signing set to take place soon, Romania’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend.

“The Caspian-Black Sea corridor is a strategic project aimed at strengthening cooperation between the participating countries, fostering economic development, and connecting Central Asian countries with the European Union. This corridor will simplify and enhance the movement of goods between the Caspian and Black Seas, ensuring a stronger connection between these regions and European markets,” the source said.

The ministry also highlighted that Romania’s port infrastructure on the Black Sea could serve as a gateway for cargo from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and other Caspian region countries. The increase in trade volume will contribute to the economic development of Romania’s maritime sector, logistics industry, and associated services.

“The establishment of the Caspian-Black Sea international transport route will be a significant milestone in regional cooperation and economic integration for Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, and Romania,” the ministry added.

To note, the Caspian-Black Sea international transport route was initiated in 2018. The route begins at the Turkmenbashi port on the Turkmen Caspian Sea coast, with cargo then transported by sea to the Alat port in Azerbaijan. From there, the shipments continue by rail to Georgia’s Black Sea ports and then by sea to Romania’s Constanța port on the Black Sea. Previously, it was planned that the agreement on this route would be signed by the end of 2024.
