BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, October 7. Kyrgyzstan's self-sufficiency in potatoes reached 162.8 percent from January through July 2024, Trend reports.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, this was reported during a meeting of the Food Security Council.

Overall, the self-sufficiency rates for other key food items are as follows: vegetables and fruits at 159 percent, milk at 116.3 percent, baked goods at 86.5 percent, meat at 79.1 percent, eggs at 71.4 percent, sugar at 49.2 percent, and vegetable oil at 48.5 percent.

Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, emphasized that the country has identified nine essential food products, seven of which are fully supplied through domestic production.

He announced the establishment of a Research Institute for Food Security and Nutrition, as instructed by President Sadyr Zhaparov. Torobaev stated that this institution will serve as a center for knowledge and innovation, aimed at enhancing the country's food security.

"I am confident that it will mark a new phase in the development of our agro-industrial policy. We must work together to ensure that every citizen of Kyrgyzstan has access to quality and safe food. This is our collective responsibility," Torobaev noted.

He added that the institute will not only conduct research in agronomy and veterinary science but also develop recommendations to improve production and processing technologies for agricultural products. Active collaboration with international organizations and scientific institutions is also planned to implement the best global practices in food security.
