BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 3. Iran plans to introduce solar-powered electricity stations with a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts in its Central Province by the next 3 years (until March 19, 2028), Executive Director of the Electricity Distribution Company of the province, Mahmoud Mahmoudi, told reporters, Trend reports.
Mahmoudi explained that, within the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2025, through March 20, 2026), 500 megawatts of solar power would be brought online, with an additional 1,800 megawatts expected in the following year (from March 21, 2026, through March 20, 2027) and 2,700 megawatts to be added in the year after that (from March 21, 2027, through March 19, 2028).
Currently, electricity generation in the region largely depends on fossil fuels. In some cases, due to a shortage of natural gas, oil is used, which leads to environmental pollution. However, with the introduction of solar power stations, a noticeable reduction in environmental pollution is anticipated.
He also mentioned that a large-scale solar power station with a capacity of 100 megawatts is under construction in the province, making it the largest solar plant in the country. Once operational, this will increase the province's solar electricity production capacity to 170 megawatts.
According to Iran's Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), the country’s solar power production potential exceeds 1,700 megawatts, with plans to increase this capacity to 4,700 megawatts by the summer.
