BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 10. Iran and Belarus have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at enhancing railway transit and freight transport within the framework of the North-South International Transport Corridor, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of Iran.

The agreement was signed between the Deputy Minister for Roads and Urban Development of Iran, Chairman of the Board and President of the Railways of Iran (RAI), Jabbar Ali Zakeri, and the head of the state-owned enterprise Belarusian Railway, Valery Verenich, in Belarus.

The goal of this agreement is to increase import, export, and transit traffic via rail.

The parties also emphasized the importance of developing joint cooperation with railway authorities from Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan to simplify freight transport along the North-South International Transport Corridor.

The agreement outlines several initiatives, including the preparation of a program for the operation of freight trains to facilitate swift and cost-effective transportation of goods, consultations with cargo owners and entrepreneurs to increase transport volumes, the reduction of freight transport tariffs to make the railway more attractive for both Iran-Belarus and reverse traffic, and the development of railway infrastructure to further enhance freight transport along the North-South Corridor. Additionally, it includes plans for the exchange of railway-related expertise between the two countries.
