A strong earthquake shook the region around the Japanese capital Tokyo Saturday, dpa reported
The quake occurred at 11:19 am (0219 GMT) and according to first estimates by the Japanese Meterological Agency had a magnitude of 5.9. Its depth was at 70 kilometres. The US Geological Survey gave the quake's strength at magnitude 5.8. Its epicentre was located 81 kilometres north of Tokyo in Tochigi prefecture.
Buildings shook and high-speed trains stopped automatically in Tokyo, but there were no reports of casualties. No tsunami warning was issued, the broadcaster NHK said.
On March 11, a magnitude-9 quake and a tsunami hit north-eastern Japan, killing more than 13,500 people. Hundreds of aftershocks have shaken the country in the last five weeks.
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which was heavily damaged on March 11 and has been leaking radioactivity, reported no major problems following Saturday's quake. Workers continued to inject waters into the reactors in an effort to cool them down after the plant's cooling systems were crippled five weeks ago
