Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 February / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / Supporters of the Azadlig bloc, who are to boycott the upcoming presidential elections, scheduled for October, will support the candidate from the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA), Sardar Jalaloglu, the DPA chairman said.

The party made the decision to participate in the approaching presidential elections by nominating Jalaloglu's candidature during a DPA Supreme Assembly meeting on 16 February.

Azadlig, which unites three opposition parties the Popular Front, Liberal and Citizen and Development, stated that the bloc would boycott the upcoming presidential elections if no changes are made.

Jalaloglu believes that boycotting the elections will not succeed.

Azadlig thinks the participation of the opposition including the DPA in the presidential elections does not make any sense at all.

"Our position concerning the elections differ, we call upon the public to boycott the elections. Azadlig does not want to be the part of the campaign which would be held under the title of elections if no democratic conditions are created," Ali Aliyev, the Azadlig co-founder stated to Trend.

The DPA was founded by Jalaloglu in 1991. Up to 2007, the party stuck to a radical position towards the authorities. In January 2007, the party took a new political course and launched a dialogue with the authorities.

There are 47,000 members of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, 4,000 - Citizen Development Party and 40,000 - Liberal Party. According to information from the Central Election Commission, there are 4,600 million voters in Azerbaijan. Azadlig has 91,000 supporters which make up 2% of the total number of voters.
