More than 1,000 police were early Saturday morning on the streets of the southern Bosnia-Herzegovina city of Mostar to prevent clashes between football fans supporting Turkey and Croatia.

The hospital in Mostar confirmed dozens of people were injured, including four policemen, when Bosnian Muslims, supporting the Turkish team, clashed with Bosnian Croat football fans, supporting Croatia's team, after the Euro quarter finals between Turkey and Croatia, reported dpa.

Police used teargas to keep the groups away from each other and to stop them throwing stones and glass bottles at each other.

The police were not able to prevent damage that members of the rival groups caused to buildings and parked cars in the city's centre.

Gunshots were also reported during the unrest, but no weapon injuries were reported.

Bosnian Croats traditionally support teams from neighbouring Croatia, while Bosnian Muslims rather cheer the Turkish teams due to five-century-old ties from the days of Ottoman rule in Bosnia.

Since the end of the 1992-95 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina Mostar remains split between Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) on the east bank of the Neretva River and Bosnian Croats on the west side.

The two sides fought each other during the 1992-94 Muslim-Croat conflict within the country's 1992-95 war.

At the same time football fans in Sarajevo were celebrating Turkey's victory. Thousands of people were on the streets of the Muslim-dominated Bosnian capital, many wrapped in Turkish national flags.
