ASTANA, Kazakhstan, March 5. Around 20 marketplaces are officially registered and paying taxes in Kazakhstan, and we expect to collect about 50 billion tenge (around $100 million) in taxes from them this year, said Serik Zhumangarin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy, at a briefing in the Mazhilis (Parliament) of Kazakhstan, Trend reports.

According to the minister, the regulatory framework and legislative mandates are instituted by Kazakhstan, compelling marketplaces to either adhere to these stipulations or exit the domestic market landscape.

“As far as I know, Temu and Pinduoduo have already made conditional registrations in Kazakhstan, and they are VAT payers. The rules are the same for everyone,” Zhumangarin said.

He reminded that if the value of a parcel does not exceed 200 euros and 31 kg, the corresponding tax is applied. If the limit is exceeded, a combined customs fee of 15 percent is applied, which is paid by the consumer.

“The rules in this area are quite simple, and everyone complies with them. This year, we expect to collect taxes from marketplaces totaling about 50 billion tenge ($100 million). This includes Temu, Pinduoduo, Alibaba, Amazon, and so on. Around 20 companies,” the deputy prime minister added.

To note, the objective of these initiatives is to equilibrate the competitive landscape and guarantee equitable tax contributions to the national fiscal framework.

Thus, Kazakhstan is strategically positioning itself to cultivate a harmonized and competitive landscape for all stakeholders in the marketplace, while simultaneously implementing equitable tax frameworks and bolstering domestic production entities.
