Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan.13 / Trend /

In 2010, cascade of the Mingachevir hydropower plant generated over 1.75 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, JSC Azerenergy (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) said today.

The plant has generated more than 64.88 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity over 56 years of operation.

In December last year the power plant generated 73.1 million kilowatt-hours compared to the forecasted 72 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

The cascade with capacity of over 400 megawatts was commissioned in Jan. 1954. The facility, which includes Mingachevir and Varvara hydropower plants, today takes an important place in the overall electricity generation. Reconstruction works are underway here, aggregates and equipment are being upgraded, and power substations' capacity is increased.

The reconstruction works are underway at the Mingachevir hydropower plant, which is the largest hydropower plant of the country. The third hydraulic unit of the plant has been fully dismantled. At present, similar works are underway, also the first hydraulic unit.

Based on the agreement, equipment and devices are purchased from the French company Areva. Chinese company SNEEC has already delivered a transformer with capacity of 200 megawatt-amperes to the station.

Also, the reconstruction works have been launched at the Varvara hydropower plant. The first hydraulic unit has been completely dismantled here. Restoration and reinforcement works are underway on the destroyed part of the dam at the lower bed, as well as on the right and left banks of the Kur River.

The cascade's capacity will reach 420 megawatts after completing all planned works on the reconstruction.
