Some 309 pay telephones are involved in 49 telecommunication nodes of the Aztelekom Production Unit of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies, Aztelekom spokeman Vidadi Ismayilov said.
Telephone services by using pay telephones allow making local, intercity and international outgoing calls. Pay telephones operate as with tokens, as well as with plastic cards of the operator, providing an opportunity to make intercity and international calls.
According to Ismayilov, 58 units of the total number of pay telephones are GSM, 90 card and 161 token devices. Devices used in the operator's network, are resistant to weather and temperature changes, the possibility of cracking reduced to a minimum.
One of the main tasks of the PU is to support the status of the pay telephones, as a cost-effective means of telephone communication, providing quality and a wide range of services.
Today, the penetration rate and reduce the cost of mobile communication has led to a decrease in popularity and profitability of pay telephone communication. The population infrequently use GSM pay telephones, as the number of owners of mobile phones in Azerbaijan increases annually. According to official statistics, subscribers of mobile operators in Azerbaijan are more than 7.8 million people, or about 87 percent of the population.
