Today, about 30km of barbed wire is streched across the separatist Tskhinvali region of Georgia, representative of the Informational-Analytical Department of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs Giorgi Jigauri said at a meeting of a temporary parliamentary commission for the restoration of Georgia's territorial integrity.
"The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia expresses its deep concern regarding the deployment of barbed wire by Russian soldiers. This is a process that undermines security and creates problems for local residents, it is forcing them to leave their homes and become internally displaced persons," Jigauri said.
Jigauri underscored that the overall length of the "line of rejection" is 350 kilometers. He noted that in Abkhazia, "the separatist territory" was surrounded by moats with a depth of 170-180 centimeters and three to five meters in length.
"As of today, the total length of all moats is three kilometers, and the total length of the occupation line is 85 kilometers," he stressed.
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
