The President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, on Monday filed a resignation petition to the head of the National Congress to become a senator, Cartes reported on social networks.

"I am submitting my application for resignation from the post of the President of the Republic of Paraguay, to continue serving the country in the Senate, carrying out the people's will expressed in the vote. God bless Paraguay," wrote Cartes in his microblog on Twitter.

Cartes was in power in Paraguay since August 2013. In August this year, he would have resigned in any case, since in April, the candidate from the ruling Colorado party, Mario Abdo Benítez, was elected the new president. Abdo is the son of Secretary Alfredo Stroessner, the last dictator of Paraguay, who ruled this country in 1954-1989. The new president will take office on August 15.

According to the law, after the resignation of Cartes, in case of its approval by the parliament, the acting head of the state until August will be vice-president Alicia Puchet.
