Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas travelled to Beirut on Tuesday in an effort to obtain Lebanon's support for its bid for statehood at the United Nations, dpa reported.
Lebanon is to assume the presidency of the UN Security Council in September.
Palestinian sources accompanying Abbas said "the president is hoping that Lebanon would play an important and effective role in his bid for UN membership on September 20," despite Israeli rejection.
The Palestine Liberation Organization currently has observer status at the United Nations.
Abbas held closed-door talks with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman.
Sources said Abbas' two-day visit to Lebanon would also tackle the issue of Palestinian camps and the improvement of the conditions of refugees.
There are some 400,000 Palestinian refugees living in 12 camps across Lebanon amid miserable conditions.
During his visit, Abbas planned to inaugurate the Palestinian embassy after the Lebanese cabinet officially recognized the state of Palestine and approved to raise the level of diplomatic representation with it.
