The United Nations-Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, said Sunday he was optimistic about reaching a deal to end the bloodshed in the country although he admitted it would be difficult, dpa reported.

"It's going to be tough. It's going to be difficult but we have to have hope," Annan said following a second meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the capital Damascus, according to the broadcaster Al Arabiya.

"The situation is so bad and so dangerous that all of us cannot afford to fail," he told reporters.

Annan, ending a two-day peace mission to Syria, added that he had handed al-Assad "concrete proposals" to end year-long violence in the country, according to the Dubai-based broadcaster.
