Israel sets free Syrian prisoner in Golan Heights

Israel Materials 20 December 2010 04:48 (UTC +04:00)

Israeli authorities in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on Sunday set free Syrian prisoner Zeid Khater after more than four months of detention, Xinhua reported.

Israeli authorities in July stormed Khater's house and arrested him with some others in the occupied Golan Heights' Majdal Shams village during a detention campaign, the arrested people were charged of communicating with their families in Syria.

Israel captured the Golan Heights following the 1967 war and unilaterally annexed it in 1981. The Syrian and Israeli governments have been technically at war ever since.

Since Israel occupied two-thirds of the Golan Heights and created a border, many families have to be separated. Only in special circumstances can some students cross, under a lot of restrictions and for study purposes only.

Israel allows students only four years to study in Syria, which means if they do not return to the Israeli side at the end of their study, they cannot return at all. If they go back to work and live in Israel, they cannot return to Syria again.
