The latest man charged with solving Belgium's political crisis has asked King Albert II to accept his resignation, a statement from the Royal Palace said Thursday, dpa reported.
The move by Johan Vande Lanotte came after the veteran Flemish politician saw his compromise proposals, meant to pave the way for government formation, being rejected late Wednesday by two Dutch-speaking parties.
"The Royal Conciliator has asked the king to be relieved of his mission," the palace said, adding that the king has not made up his mind on whether to accept the request.
Vande Lanotte was asked to meet again with the monarch on Monday.
Belgian politicians are arguing over the set up of their federal state, with representatives of richer, Dutch-speaking Flanders demanding more autonomy, in order to minimize subsidies to poorer, French-speaking Wallonia.
