The United States said on Wednesday that the Libyan ambassador representing the opposition's National Transitional Council (NTC) would have access to the frozen embassy bank accounts once he returns to the embassy in Washington D.C.., Xinhua reported.
"We have approved the re-opening of the Libyan embassy and are waiting for Ambassador Aujali to return to the United States on an A1 visa," the State Department spokesperson's office said in a statement.
"Once he returns, he will be accredited and receive appropriate authorization to access the Libyan embassy accounts, which were frozen when we suspended the embassy's operations," the statement said.
The U.S. recognized the NTC as the legitimate governing authority of Libya in mid-July. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Tuesday that the U.S. had transferred the Libyan embassy in Washington to the body.
Ali Aujali was the Libyan government's top envoy in Washington, but defected in Feb. after anti-government protests broke out and sided with the NTC.
The U.S. closed the Libyan embassy in March.
