Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez returned to Venezuela on Thursday after a stay of several days in Havana where he underwent radiotherapy to treat a recurring cancer, dpa reported.

He was to rest at home for two days before returning to the Cuban capital for another round of treatment. Chavez, who is seeking another presidential mandate in an October election, said he was fit enough to take part in a government event while he is in Venezuela.

While he was in Cuba, he retained his presidential powers and governed from a distance.

Chavez, 57, needed surgery last month to remove a tumour from his pelvic area. He confirmed that it was a recurrence of the cancer diagnosed and removed in June 2011, after which he received chemotherapy. The president said however that the cancer had not metastasized to any organs.
