BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 18. The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) has reported that natural gas production in Eurasia rose by 7% in 2024, reaching a total of 887 bcm, Trend reports.

This increase added 58 bcm to global supply, boosting the region’s share of global gas output to 21%, with Russia continuing to dominate the landscape.

Russia accounted for 79% of the region’s production, with output rising by 7.5% to 685 bcm - the largest annual increase recorded globally. The surge was supported by growing domestic demand from the power and industrial sectors, alongside expanded pipeline exports to both China and the EU.

Among other regional producers, Azerbaijan stood out with an 8% increase in output, reaching 36 bcm. The growth was primarily driven by the initial ramp-up of the Absheron gas field, which added 1.5 bcm in its first phase and is expected to reach 5.5 bcm annually as further phases come online. Looking ahead, Azerbaijan is also preparing to bring the massive 112 bcm Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli (ACG) gas field into production by 2025, a development that could further solidify the country’s role in regional energy supply.

Turkmenistan’s gas production, by contrast, declined slightly by 1% to 75.4 bcm, largely due to output challenges in its mature fields. Uzbekistan maintained stable output year-on-year, though it faced delays in bringing new production online.

Despite varied national trends, GECF notes that the Eurasian region remains on track to play a significant role in global gas supply, supported by ongoing infrastructure upgrades and new field developments across multiple countries.
