Azerbaijan's transport sector ups cargo transportation

In January to March 2010, cargo transportation made up 43.2 million tons of cargo, or 3.1 percent more than the same period of 2009, the Azerbaijan State Statistics Committee reported.

Of the total volume of transported cargo, 71.4 percent accounted for of the private sector. In January to March, of the total volume of transported cargo, 47.2 percent was transported by cars, 35percent - pipelines, 11.3 percent- railway and 6.5 percent - ships.

Passenger transportation totaled 312.7 million people or 3 percent more than January-March 2009. The share of private sector in the passenger transportation made up 85.1 percent. The passenger transportation by cars made up 85.2 percent and metro - 14.3 percent.

The Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) transported 4.9 million tons of cargo or 3 percent more than the same period of 2009

The cargo shipping via sea rose by 4.8 percent over the same period of 2009 to 2.8 million tons. 67.9 cargo deliveries fell on oil and oil products, while 32.1 percent was dry cargo. All cargo deliveries were implemented under the international operations.

The volume of cargo processed in Azerbaijani ports was 2.3 million tons in January to March 2010. 85 percent of the total volume fells to the international transit (18.9 percent increase). The volume of import increased by 5.5 times and export - by 83.4 percent.

In January to March 2010, cargo transportation by vehicles made up 20.3 million tons, or 6.4 percent more than the same period of 2009. Passenger transportation comprised 266.3 million people, or 7.2 percent more, with 96.5 percent of people using buses and 3.5 percent - vehicles.

Nearly 44.8 million passengers used metro services with a decline by 16.4 percent.

In January to March 2010, the passenger transportation via airways made up 188,300 people compared to 268,400 in January to March 2009. Two-thirds of the traffic volume falls on the public sector.

During the report period of 2010, 7.9 million tons of cargo (5.5 percent increase) and 34.5 million passengers (7.8 percent increase) were transported via the Eurasian corridor.
