Georgia increases import of milk

Georgia imported milk worth $29.6 million in 2019, Trend reports via the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Meanwhile, the import of thickened or sugar added milk amounted to $21.3 million, while the value of sugar-free milk import came to $8.3 million.

The share of milk import was only 0.33 percent of the total imports of Georgia in 2019. In 2018, Georgia imported $24.8 million worth of milk amounting to 0.27 percent of total imports.

From January through November 2019, Georgia imported 6,514 tons of sugar-free milk and cream, while the amount of thickened or sugar-added milk and cream was 9,352 tons.

From January through November 2019, the top three countries from where Georgia imported milk and cream with no sugar include Ukraine - 3,221 tons, Iran - 816 tons, Turkey - 508 tons.

Over the same period of time, the top three countries which exported thickened or sugar-added milk and cream to Georgia include Ukraine - 2,446 tons, Belarus - 2,045 tons, France - 1,238 tons.

According to Geostat's agricultural survey, households in Georgia produced 555.3 million liters of milk in 2018 which is an increase of 5.1 percent compared to 2017.

As for milk processed by factories, 7,479 tons of milk was produced in the first nine months of 2019 worth 15.9 million lari ($5.5 million).

Georgia did not export milk with no sugar at all in 2019, while it exported thickened or sugar-added milk worth $767,300 in 2019, Geostat says.
